QotD: What?! No Goodnight Kiss?

Funny, all the good bars in Roppongi I've been to, I was there when I was really drunk, or somebody knew the place and I followed and never remembered to ask the location later, or the combination of both. (also funny, because the coolest bar I've been to also had kinda sex place, dark room upstairs with a whole lot of cosy bed/sofa thingy Don't think it's the same place as there was no yakuza type as far as I can remember)

I work in Roppongi Hills so I go there every day, but of late I don't go over to the, you know, Almond intersection district. Feck Roppongi.

Woot! Canucks can help you drink away ANY bad experience, eh?

Um, I've been drinking my gin with C.C. Lemon...
Is that your way of asking me for a date?

I know, I know. Where do you like to go? Kabukicho? Ha.

It could have been the same place. They could have just been ordinary hoodlums and not yakuza. I was *really* drunk. How many bars in Roppongi have sex rooms? Maybe you should do a survey for us.

Yes! Because when you come to Japan and we meet in Tokyo, you have to show me the best places to drink gin and C.C. Lemon. I don't want to end up in Roppongi!
Indeed. I have never been so grateful to Canada in all my life as I was that night!
Well, I'll be happy to, but I've never ordered gin and C.C. Lemon in a bar. I should warn you, though, that I didn't always hang around the, um, nice places in town, if you get my drift.
Well, we wouldn't be bringing the kids along.
What did you drink in a bar? With your gin, I mean...

I saw a couple of places where gaijin mentioned that Roppongi is the only place in Japan they don't feel safe. I've seen a couple of other people mention Kabukicho as being "unsafe" too. I thought it was kind of interesting that the places gaijin don't feel safe are the places where all the gaijin are. (I didn't see a lot of other white people in Kabukicho, but A LOT of Africans and Chinese and maybe Indians or Pakistanis--A LOT)

Is there anywhere in Japan you don't feel safe?

I think the only place I ever went where I didn't feel safe, or at least I wouldn't have felt safe if I hadn't been with my impressive boyfriend, was Shinsekai in Osaka. I never had any trouble there at all, and I love Shinsekai rather more than most people seem to--anywhere there are markets where you can buy one shoe or maybe some used underwear is totally awesome with me--but we went there several times before I felt comfortable there. We had to go though. Kushi-katsu rocks.

Usually tonic or Campari or tonic and Campari.

Drank a lot of beer, too, of course. Not with the gin. But beer is much more readily available and cheaper. Everywhere has beer, even the ramen shops where you pay a vending machine. Gin usually requires a bar, and that is often expensive.

I've seen the beer in the vending machines but haven't been to a bar yet. Damn kids.
The tonic and Campari will work for me.

Well, cool, then. If I recall, the Japanese have some strange idea about girls who drink Campari...

Damn kids, indeed.

What strange ideas?
Campari is tough. A year or 2 ago, I tried to stock a full bar (all divvied up to friends and family now in Ohio) and I had Campari. I liked it but no one else seemed to.
Hey, if you Google "japanese girls who drink campari" the first thing that comes up is this blog. Yay!
That's great.

Yah, well, it's bitter. I don't remember exactly. I used to go to this one bar all the time and order a gin and tonic with Campari in it and talk to the barkeeps, and they said it was weird that I like Campari so much. And I asked them why, and they said girls don't usually drink it, and then they snickered and said that they thought girls who like Campari are...I think they said very sexual or something.

Kimura? Thoughts? Oooh, Kimura?

Never heard of it. If I would venture a guess, the sexy ads for Campari may be, ah, a bit too inspirational for Japanese standard.

Speaking of Campari, I recall there was this Spanish girl who told me she loved Campari, and stared at me in strange manner. Probably a missed clue.

I only cruised one or two bars in Roppongi many years ago... can't even remember their names. I do remember the Shibuya area well though. Always brings that Blade Runner imagery to mind.

Heh, the Yakuza don't worry me. Not that I go out looking for trouble, mind you. I've been in bars in Shanghai/Beijing/Guangzhou run by local triads... and they're always nice if you keep paying for your drinks and don't behave like a total asshole.
