QotD: But It Tastes Good!
What are your favorite weird food combinations?
Submitted by Dulce.
I've been thinking about this one. It's so hard to know what's "weird" because I tend to think that what I do is normal and that everyone does it. Does chile and chocolate sound weird to you? I'm from New Mexico and tend to put chile in nearly everything. Chile makes everything better.
Peanut butter and maple syrup? My dad used to mix them in a bowl and eat it, straight out of the bowl. I have inherited that, although I don't do it as often as he does because...well, that can't be all that good for you.
Butter and soy sauce? I just heard that described as a cutting-edge "fusion" combination, but I started doing it while I was in Japan, and I think a lot of Japanese people do it without knowing they are cutting edge. It tastes righteously good, though. Those two complement each other so well, making a super silky, rich sauce for any vegetable. Yum.
Ham with Dr. Pepper sauce? Damn, baby, that's not weird--it's the South.

Speaking of which, you might like yesterday's article about Paula Deen.
Yeah, thanks for the link. I didn't know all that back history. She's right that, in the South, you can't admit these kinds of problems. My dad had some of the worst depression I've ever seen, and he never could have admitted it or sought help. Southerners don't do that and think y'all Yankees are weak.
As for having the time to watch a 4-hour pot of greens--well, that's what Crock-Pots are for. I would never, ever live without at least one Crock-Pot in my house. Actually I did, in Japan, but God I missed Southern food. Now that we're settled, I will likely have three or four of them plus a rice cooker. Our whole dinner can then be thrown in pots in the morning, I don't have to watch it at all, and it's hot and ready at dinnertime. Crock-Pots are heaven.
