In all fairness to the people of Berkeley, not everyone here agrees with Code Pink and the City Council. I work approximately one block from this ridiculousness and I loathe it. My dad was in the Marines for 29 years, so I am admittedly biased. However, I am also anti-war, pro-troop withdrawal, etc. My husband and I have been arguing about the merits of the Code Pink love-in and other crap (my opinion) going on to protest the Marines.

Here's my general gripe, Code Pink is angry because (a) they hate the war and (b) they think the Marines challenged their right to protest, therefore, their right to free speech. What Code Pink and the Berkeley City Council fail to realize is that the Marines are ALSO entitled to free speech (even the KKK is entitled to it, though none of us really want them to use it). Recruiting is arguably a form of free speech. If you limit free speech rights for one group, you risk limiting them for all. It's plain and simple. Also, Berkeley isn't really the sort of place that needs to worry about flocks of young people being swayed by the lures of great financial gain to fight in Iraq. Most of the people here are at least middle class, if not higher, and I suspect starting pay for the Marines isn't up to snuff. If people want to protest the war, then protest the government. But trying to ban the Marines is ridiculous.

Sorry for the long rant. Perhaps I should write a post of my own about it....

I had a sneaking suspicion there was at least one person in Berkeley who wasn't an asshole. At first I thought about just blaming Code Pink for being idiots, but when the City Council was involved as well, I sensed a larger problem. The thing that got me most--well, I think there were a couple of things. For one thing, it is wrong to suggest that the Marines are coextensive with the Vietnam and Iraq wars. Since they're a branch of the military, they've been involved in those wars certainly, but they've also been involved in most of our "humanitarian" and "peacekeeping" missions as well (in Kosovo, etc). I know a lot of people disagree with our involvement in those places as well as our engagement in wars, but that's an issue of our entire foreign policy, almost none of which the Marines have any control over.

And unless Berkeley wants to secede, they are part of America and it is not only the right of the Marines to recruit on US soil but their duty to do so, especially now when they are badly overextended and in need of more recruits.

Also, the guy who suggested that Berkeley was being occupied by the Marines is a total tool.

My dad was a Marine for 11 years (I also have uncles and cousins in the Corps--we're a Marine family), so I'm maybe biased too, but the logical inconsistencies irritated me as much as the fact that it was the Marines.

like Prince didn't totally already do that shit back in the 80s

Just a minor pedant correction here - Prince got it from Slade (who probably got it from Hammurabi).

Yes, you're right, but most people's memories don't extend back that far.

I have to second this GB. Code Pink is a lunatic fringe group. While Berkeley is naturally a liberal stronghold due to its history, very few besides Code Pink think Code Pink is doing any good at all. As Stewart said, "they're not helping." and you know what? They don't really want to help. They just want attention. Anyone who becomes this obsessive about anything has issues. But, that's just my opinion. But, thanks for thepost, It was very interesting and I agree with you about the Slate writer. What a 'straw man' argument if I ever heard one.

I know Code Pink is lunatic fringe (or lunatic boa, as the case may be), but the City Council? I was a bit taken aback by that. Since the City Council at least nominally represents the people of Berkeley, there seems to be something larger going on there than just Code Pink.

I am hoping Alice Waters wasn't involved in this.

Was the City Council involved? Okay, then I'm out of the loop. I'll google it. "Lunatic boa" hee hee Good one.
